Filipino Bistek

This is the first recipe I made in real time of this blog. The others that came before this were old photos and recipes from my memory. So this is kind of exciting! I have step by step instructions with photos too!

Super simple and savory meal. This took less time to cook than the rice on "Quick Rice" mode. Not really sure what makes this dish specific to the Philippines because all these ingredients can be found in any kitchen no matter your background.

1. So First things first- This doesnt take long so get your rice cooking in the rice cooker before you start.

2. Then you want to cut your onion into rings and sauté them till carmelized. Then set aside for later.

2. Brown your meat.

You want to use thinly sliced beef for this dish. I used Thinly Sliced Top Sirloin.

Don't crowd your pan, if you have more meat than can fit you can do this in batches.

This should take 2-3 minutes on each side since they are very thin.

If you have the time to marinate your meat with the soy sauce and lemon then go for it. I did this without marinating it first and it turns out just as good.

3. Pour in the marinade. Let it simmer till meat is cooked through and the sauce has reduced to half. Stir in the onions from earlier.

Soy sauce and lemon and some black pepper is all you need for this dish. The brand of soy sauce is very important. I swear by Marca Piña, it really makes a difference in taste. Also very particular in using FRESH lemon not lemon juice in a jar or whatever. NOT THE SAME!

4. Serve with rice.

Add some crunchy chili garlic for an extra umph. And your done.

INGREDIENTS:

1lb Thinly Sliced Top Sirloin

1 Yellow Onion - Sliced into rings

1 cup of Soy Saue

2 Lemons - juiced

1 Tbsp Freshly Ground Black Pepper

DIRECTIONS:

1. Sauté onions til translucent and caramelized - set aside

2. Brown the meat on both sides. - Do this in batches if you need to.

3. Pour soy sauce and lemon over the meat. Let simmer til meat is fully cooked through and sauce has reduced to half

4. Enjoy with rice! Pour some of that sauce onto the rice and top with crunchy garlic if you have it!
